The year was 1998. Colin Cowie had just published his tome entitled, simply and elegantly, Weddings. I was barely 21 years, in college, and dreaming about opening the Bellagio Wedding Chapels as a Wedding Coordinator. I wanted this book so badly, I actually timed my paycheck and bills to be able to pay for it in cash the moment it came out. I ordered in advance, and was wait-listed.
You see, to a Las Vegas Wedding Planner just starting out, Colin Cowie represented the very best of what the industry had (and still has) to offer. Equal parts rock star, rouge, and refinement, Colin Cowie is at once both Mick Jagger and Fred Astaire. And his book served as my bible, my training manual, and an inspiration.
When I got the chance to hear him speak about Champagne today at a Moet Event taking place at The Keep Memory Alive Center (more to come) I jumped at the chance to attend. And I must say that he did not disappoint! His deep love of life, his believe in luxury and living through celebration, and his sometimes irreverent humor made him a joy to listen to.
Often times I have found that the person does not quite match the persona when I have met certain people that I have long admired. But Colin was a dream. I was able to steal a private moment with him for a few words, and as he graciously took the time to embrace me, kiss me on both cheeks, and pose for a few photos all I could think was, "He smells like champagne and cake batter and heaven! This picture is practically wedding planner porn!"
Now, that is of course (somewhat of a) joke. But the truth is, what I really thought was that I could not have picked a better person to hold in such high esteem! It was an honor a pleasure, and a delight!
Thank you Colin for your time, your work, and your inspiration! We can't wait to see what you do next!
